It is one of the first questions we get from warehouse and distribution managers across Chicagoland: “How many cameras do I need?” Most people expect a tidy answer based on square footage. The honest answer is that square footage is the wrong starting point. A 50,000 square foot building packed with tall racking needs a very different camera count than an open cross-dock of the same size. The right way to size a system is to count the views that actually matter, then make sure your cabling and network can carry them.
Why square-footage math falls short
You will see rules of thumb online like “one camera per 500 square feet.” That number is fine for a rough budget conversation, but it breaks down the moment you walk a real warehouse floor. Tall pallet racking blocks sightlines, so a camera that should cover three aisles ends up seeing one. Ceiling height changes how much usable detail a lens captures. A 20,000 square foot building might genuinely need anywhere from 10 to 16 cameras depending on how it is laid out. Coverage is about lines of sight, not floor area.
The better method is simple: walk the building and count the critical views. Every place where product changes hands, money is at stake, or someone could enter is a view that needs a camera. Add them up and you have a real number instead of a guess.
Count by zone, not by area
Here is how we break a typical warehouse into zones when we scope a job. Most facilities fall into a predictable range once you tally these up.
Dock doors and loading bays
This is where most warehouse loss happens, so it gets priority. Plan for one camera per dock door, mounted to see the inbound trailer bay and the face of anyone working the door. For a building with eight docks, that is eight cameras before you have covered a single aisle. Dock cameras also settle disputes over what arrived damaged versus what left damaged, which pays for itself fast.
Aisles and racking
Inside the racking, a good benchmark is one camera covering roughly 90 to 120 feet of aisle at standard 15 to 22 foot ceiling heights. Longer aisles or very tall racking mean more cameras, because the racking itself blocks the view partway down. This is usually the largest group of cameras in the building, often 8 to 14 in a mid-size facility.
Perimeter and exterior
You want eyes on every exterior door, the yard, and the corners of the building. Four to six perimeter positions is common, with weather-rated cameras that hold up through a Midwest winter. Good exterior coverage is also your first line of defense, because it catches problems before they get inside.
Entries, offices and high-value areas
Front entry, employee entrances, the cage or high-value storage, and the area around any safe or cash handling all need their own views. These are lower in count but high in importance.
Add it up and the ranges look like this for most buildings:
- Small warehouse (around 5,000 sq ft): roughly 4 to 8 cameras
- Medium warehouse (around 20,000 sq ft): roughly 10 to 16 cameras
- Large warehouse (around 50,000 sq ft): roughly 18 to 28 cameras
- Distribution center (around 100,000 sq ft): roughly 25 to 40 cameras
Treat these as planning ranges, not promises. Your real number comes from the walk-through, because layout, ceiling height, and racking density move it more than total area ever will.
Camera count is only half the system
A common mistake is to obsess over the camera quantity and forget that every one of those cameras is a device on your network. Each camera needs a cable run back to a switch, power over that same cable, recording capacity, and enough bandwidth so the footage is actually usable when you need it.
- Cabling: each camera is a home run of Cat6 (or fiber for long perimeter pulls) back to the comm room. Sloppy or undersized cabling is the number one reason camera systems underperform.
- Power: most modern cameras run on Power over Ethernet, so your switches need enough PoE budget to feed every camera at once without browning out.
- Recording and retention: more cameras and higher resolution mean more storage. Decide up front how many days of footage you need to keep, because that drives the recorder size.
- Bandwidth: high-resolution cameras generate real traffic. The network has to carry it without choking your other business systems.
This is exactly why we treat cameras as part of the building’s structured cabling and network, not as a bolt-on. When the cabling, switching and recording are designed together, the system is reliable and easy to expand. When they are not, you get dropped feeds, missing footage, and finger-pointing.
Resolution and placement beat raw camera count
More cameras is not automatically better. A handful of well-placed, higher-resolution cameras often outperforms a larger fleet of cheap ones aimed at the wrong angles. Two principles matter most. First, match the camera to the job: a wide view for general awareness over a floor, a tighter view where you need to read a face or a license plate. Second, mind the lighting, especially at dock doors where bright daylight behind a person can turn them into a silhouette. The goal is footage that holds up, not a high number on a spec sheet.
A practical way to scope your own building
Before you call anyone, you can get most of the way to a real number yourself:
- Print or pull up a floor plan and mark every dock door.
- Mark every exterior door and the building corners.
- Walk each aisle and note where racking blocks the view.
- Flag high-value or cash-handling areas.
- Count the marks. That is your starting camera count.
From there, an installer should walk the building with you, confirm sightlines, check ceiling heights, and tell you honestly where you can combine views and where you genuinely need another camera. If someone quotes you a count without walking the floor, be skeptical.
