You just paid for a few hundred new cable drops in your building. Every jack clicks in, the lights on the switch blink, and the contractor says you’re all set. Six months later, phones start dropping calls in one wing, a few workstations crawl along at a fraction of the speed you paid for, and nobody can tell you why. This is the situation a certification test report exists to prevent.
At RG Fiber, we certify every link we install across Chicagoland and the Midwest, and we hand the report to the customer whether they asked for it or not. Here’s what that report actually is, what it measures, and why you should never accept a cabling job without one.
Verification, qualification, and certification are not the same thing
Contractors use the word “tested” loosely, and that’s where owners get burned. There are three very different levels of cable testing:
- Verification — a basic continuity check. It confirms all eight conductors are connected in the right order. A $100 tester does this. It tells you nothing about performance.
- Qualification — a step up. It estimates whether a link can carry certain traffic (say, gigabit Ethernet) but doesn’t measure the link against the actual cabling standard.
- Certification — the real thing. A calibrated field tester, such as a Fluke Networks DSX-series unit, measures every electrical parameter of every link against the TIA/EIA standard for the cable category you bought, and issues a pass or fail for each one.
When a contractor says the job was tested, ask which of the three they mean. If the answer is a beeping continuity wand, your Cat6a installation has been checked to roughly the same depth as a lamp cord.
What a certification report actually measures
A certification tester puts each link through a battery of measurements defined by the TIA standards. You don’t need to memorize them, but it helps to know what the big ones mean when you flip through a report:
- Wire map and length — pairs terminated correctly, and the link within the 90-meter permanent-link limit.
- Insertion loss — how much signal is lost end to end. Too much and the far end can’t hear clearly.
- NEXT and crosstalk measurements — how much the pairs interfere with each other. Sloppy terminations show up here first.
- Return loss — signal reflected back by kinks, cheap components, or bad terminations.
- Propagation delay and delay skew — timing differences between pairs that matter for high-speed traffic.
Each link gets a margin: how much headroom it passed with. A link that scrapes by with almost no margin is legal, but a whole job full of near-misses tells you something about the workmanship. Good installs pass with room to spare.
Fiber has its own version of this. An OTDR trace and loss measurements show every splice, connector and bend in the link, which is why we covered fiber test reports in their own post. The principle is the same: measured proof, not a thumbs-up.
Why the report protects you, not the contractor
It’s your proof the job meets the standard you paid for
Cat6a costs more than Cat6 for a reason. But category ratings apply to the installed link, not the box the cable came in. Pulling Cat6a too tight, untwisting pairs at the jack, or mixing in bargain patch panels can quietly turn a Cat6a job into something that performs worse than well-installed Cat6. The certification report is the only document that proves the links in your walls actually perform to the category on the invoice.
It’s the foundation of the manufacturer warranty
Major cabling manufacturers back certified installations with long-term system warranties, often measured in decades, when the work is done by a qualified installer and the links pass certification. No test report, no warranty. If you ever need to make a claim, the report is the paperwork that makes it possible.
It ends finger-pointing later
When something acts up a year from now, the first argument is always the same: the IT vendor blames the cabling, the cabling contractor blames the equipment. A certification report with a dated pass on every link settles it in minutes. Either the physical layer was good when it was handed over, or it wasn’t. That alone has saved our commercial customers countless hours of troubleshooting in occupied buildings where downtime is expensive.
It protects you during construction handoff
On new buildouts and tenant improvement projects, cabling usually goes in months before move-in, and other trades work around it the whole time. A drop that passed in March can be damaged by a drywall screw in May. Certified results tied to the punch list establish exactly what condition the cabling was in at handoff, which matters when a general contractor, an electrician and a low-voltage contractor all touched the same walls.
What to ask for on your next cabling project
You don’t need to become a cabling expert. You just need to put a few requirements in writing when you collect bids:
- Certification testing (not verification) on 100% of copper links, to the TIA standard for the installed category.
- OTDR and loss testing on all fiber strands.
- The full electronic test results delivered at closeout — native tester files or PDF export, not a summary page.
- Labels on the report that match the labels on your jacks and patch panels, so any link can be found later.
- Retest of any repaired or re-terminated link, with updated results.
A reputable contractor won’t flinch at any of this, because it’s already part of how they work. The bids that get uncomfortable when you ask for certified results are the ones telling you something.
The bottom line
Cabling is buried in walls and ceilings, and it’s expected to work for 15 to 20 years. It’s one of the few parts of your building you can’t easily inspect after the fact, which is exactly why measured, documented proof at handover matters so much.
