“What’s this going to cost?” is the first question we hear on almost every fiber project, and the honest answer is: it depends on your building. That’s not a dodge — two offices of the same square footage can come in thousands of dollars apart based on ceiling type, distances, fiber count and how much termination work is involved. What we can do is walk you through the typical ranges, explain exactly what drives the number up or down, and show you how to get a quote you can actually budget against.
This guide covers premises fiber — cabling installed inside and between your buildings: backbone runs between comm rooms, fiber to equipment on a plant floor, or links between buildings on a campus. If you’re asking what an internet carrier charges to bring fiber service to your address, that’s a different conversation (and often subsidized by the carrier on a term contract).
Typical price ranges (and why they’re wide)
Across the industry, indoor fiber installation labor and cable typically lands in the range of a few dollars per foot — roughly $1–$6 per linear foot for straightforward pathways, climbing toward $7–$12 per foot when runs have to fight through finished walls, packed ceilings or congested conduit. Terminated, tested fiber drops generally run a few hundred dollars to around $1,000 each depending on connector count, splicing method and testing requirements.
For a mid-size commercial building — say a backbone between two or three comm rooms plus a handful of fiber links to equipment — many projects land in the four-figure to low five-figure range. Larger buildings with 100+ drops, multi-building campuses or outdoor underground runs scale up from there. We’d rather give you those honest brackets than quote a fake “average” that won’t match your building.
The eight factors that actually drive your price
1. Distance and pathway
Fiber itself isn’t the expensive part — getting it from point A to point B is. A clean run through accessible ceiling space with existing cable tray is fast. Drilling through masonry walls, crossing a plant floor with conduit, or trenching between buildings adds real labor. Outdoor underground runs are their own category: directional boring, permits and restoration can dominate the budget.
2. Fiber type and strand count
Single-mode and multimode cable are priced differently, and a 12-strand backbone costs more than a 2-strand link — though not proportionally. Pulling 24 strands instead of 12 adds modest material cost while doubling your capacity, which is why we usually recommend over-provisioning strands on any run that’s hard to repeat later.
3. Termination method
Every strand needs a connector on each end. Fusion-spliced pigtails give the cleanest, lowest-loss result but require a splicer and more time per strand. Field-terminated mechanical connectors are quicker on small jobs. High strand counts mean termination labor adds up fast — it’s often a third or more of the labor on a backbone job.
4. Ceiling and wall conditions
Open deck or accessible drop tile is easy. Hard-lid ceilings, asbestos-era buildings requiring abatement protocols, plenum spaces requiring rated cable, and finished executive areas that need clean patching all add cost.
5. Comm room readiness
Fiber has to land somewhere. If your comm rooms already have racks, patch panels and grounded, powered space, great. If the “comm room” is a plywood board in a janitor closet, plan on some buildout — a wall-mount enclosure or rack, fiber patch panel and cable management.
6. Testing and documentation
A professional install includes insertion-loss testing on every strand (and OTDR traces on longer or spliced runs), labeled panels and as-built documentation. It’s a small slice of the budget that pays for itself the first time you troubleshoot — and it’s worth confirming any quote you compare includes it.
7. Working hours and site rules
Occupied offices that require after-hours work, manufacturing plants with safety orientations and hot-work permits, and union-site requirements all affect labor pricing. Tell your contractor up front — surprises here are the most common source of change orders.
8. Prevailing local labor rates
Labor is the biggest line item on most fiber jobs, so geography matters. Chicagoland rates differ from downstate Illinois or rural Wisconsin, and large metro projects often involve parking, loading-dock scheduling and building-management requirements that add hours.
Where businesses overspend (and underspend)
- Overspend: paying for OM3/OM4 multimode on long campus runs where single-mode would cost about the same and never need replacing.
- Overspend: mobilizing a crew twice because the project was split into phases that could have been one visit.
- Underspend: pulling the minimum strand count to save a few dollars, then paying full mobilization again two years later to add capacity.
- Underspend: skipping testing and documentation — cheap now, expensive the first time something fails and nobody knows which strand goes where.
How to get an accurate quote
You don’t need engineering drawings to get a real number. A good contractor can firm up pricing quickly with a few basics:
- A floor plan (even a rough one) marked with where fiber needs to start and end
- Building construction details: ceiling types, riser/conduit availability, comm room locations
- What the fiber will carry — network backbone, cameras, Wi-Fi uplinks, machine connections — so strand count and fiber type can be sized correctly
- Site constraints: working hours, security clearances, union requirements
- A walkthrough — a one-hour site visit removes most of the guesswork and usually tightens the price
Be cautious with any bid that’s dramatically lower than the others. On fiber work, that gap usually comes out of termination quality, testing or documentation — exactly the things you can’t see at handover but pay for later.

Commercial fiber installation isn’t a commodity with a sticker price — it’s labor-driven work where your building’s specifics set the number. Expect per-foot and per-drop pricing in the ranges above, get a walkthrough before you sign anything, and make sure testing, labeling and documentation are in the scope.
